Custom Cabinetry Vs. Stock Cabinets: What’s Right For Your Vermont Kitchen?
If you are remodeling your kitchen, you have a big decision to make: do you buy standard cabinets from a big-box store, or invest in custom woodworking? Here is what 50 years of building in Chittenden County has taught me about the difference.

When you start planning a kitchen remodel, the very first thing you usually look at is the cabinets. They dictate the look, the layout, and a large portion of your budget.
If you walk into a big-box home improvement store here in Chittenden County, you will see aisles of standard, pre-made cabinets. They look nice under the store lights, and the price tag is usually pretty tempting.
But as a master custom woodworker with over 50 years of experience, I spend a lot of time tearing those exact same cabinets out of houses just a few years after they were installed.
If you are trying to decide between stock cabinets and custom cabinetry in Vermont, here is an honest look at the difference, and what is actually right for your home.
1. The Problem with "Standard" Sizes in Vermont Homes
Stock cabinets are built in a factory to fit perfectly straight walls and perfectly level floors. They come in standard widths, usually in 3-inch increments (like 12", 15", or 18").
But let’s be honest about the homes in places like Burlington, Williston, and Shelburne. Many of our houses are decades, or centuries, old. The floors have settled, the walls are slightly bowed, and nothing is perfectly square.
When an installer tries to force standard cabinets into a quirky space, they have to use "filler strips", blank pieces of wood used to cover up the awkward gaps where the cabinet didn’t quite fit the wall. You lose valuable storage space, and it looks like a compromise.
Because my team and I build custom kitchen cabinets in Chittenden County, we measure your space down to the millimetre. We build the cabinets specifically for your walls. No filler strips. No wasted corners. Just a flawless, built-in fit.
2. Materials: Particleboard vs. Solid Wood
This is where the real difference in cost comes from. Most stock cabinets, even the expensive ones, are built using MDF (Medium Density Fibre-board) or particleboard for the cabinet boxes, covered in a thin wood veneer or plastic thermofoil.
If particleboard gets wet (like from a leaky kitchen sink or a boiling pot of pasta), it swells like a sponge and crumbles. It cannot be repaired.
When we build custom cabinetry, we use premium, furniture-grade plywood for the boxes and solid, hard wood for the face frames, doors, and drawers. If solid wood gets a scratch, it can be sanded and refinished. It is generational quality built to last a lifetime.
3. Building for How You Actually Cook
With stock cabinets, you have to adapt your life to fit the cabinets.
With custom woodworking, we adapt the cabinets to fit your life.
- Are you a baker who needs a slightly lower counter section for kneading dough?
- Do you want a hidden, pull-out drawer specifically designed to hold your heavy stand mixer?
- Do you need a spice rack built directly into the space next to your stove?
We design and build it all. If you can dream it, we can build it.

Common Questions About Custom Cabinets (FAQs)
How long does it take to build custom cabinets?
Because every single piece is handcrafted from raw lumber specifically for your home, it does take longer than ordering stock cabinets from a warehouse. Once we finalize the design and measurements, it typically takes 6 to 8 weeks for the cabinets to be built in the shop. I will give you a very clear, realistic timeline before we ever start.
Can I get my custom cabinets painted instead of stained?
Absolutely. While many folks love the natural look of stained cherry, maple, or oak, painted cabinets are incredibly popular. We use high-grade, durable cabinet enamels (not standard wall paint) to ensure your painted finish is smooth, flawless, and stands up to daily wear and tear.
Do you install the cabinets, too?
Yes! Tradecraft VT is a full-service general contractor. I design the cabinets, I build the cabinets, and my team and I personally install them in your home. This ensures that the person who measured your space is the exact same person doing the installation, leaving no room for errors.
What kind of hinges and drawer glides do you use?
We only use premium, heavy-duty, soft-close hardware. There is nothing worse than beautiful wood cabinets with cheap hinges that sag after a year. Our drawer glides are rated to hold heavy weights (like stacks of cast-iron pans) while still closing silently and smoothly every single time.
