Colchester's Malletts Bay shoreline is lined with places that started life as summer camps. Plenty of them have been added to and improved over the years, and plenty more are being bought by people who want to live there through the winter rather than close up in October. That conversion is one of the most common jobs in this town, and it's rarely as simple as it looks.
The issue is almost always thermal. A building put up for July doesn't have the insulation, the sealed envelope, the frost-protected foundation, or often the plumbing to survive a Vermont February. Doing it properly means dealing with all of that, not just adding a heater and hoping. We don't cut corners on insulation here because the winters simply don't allow it.
