Walk into almost any home and your eye goes straight to the staircase. It is the first piece of real woodwork most people see, and when it is dated, wobbly, or covered in worn carpet, it makes the whole house feel tired.
A staircase is also one of the most rewarding things I build, because it is equal parts engineering and craft.
What a Staircase Remodel Can Involve
A staircase remodel can be as simple as refinishing the existing treads and swapping the railing, or as involved as a full structural rebuild with new stringers, custom hardwood treads, and hand-built balusters, depending on the condition and the look you want.
Not every stair needs to be torn out. Here are the common paths, from lightest to most involved:
- Refinish and re-rail: Keep the existing structure, refinish the treads in a durable hardwood finish, and replace the railing and balusters for a completely new look.
- Carpet to hardwood: Pull the old carpet and cap the stairs with solid hardwood treads and risers. This is one of the highest-impact upgrades for the money.
- Full custom rebuild: Rebuild the staircase from the stringers up in solid wood, with custom treads, balusters, and a handrail milled in our shop.
