Quick Answer

Tradecraft VT remodels homes in Jericho, Underhill and Richmond, Vermont, and my shop in Essex Junction sits close to all three. Kitchen and bath remodels, whole-house renovations, porch rebuilds and custom woodwork all suit these towns. Hillside lots near Mount Mansfield bring heavier snow and steep driveways, river-valley homes in Richmond can sit in flood hazard areas, and older village houses hide old framing. A free site visit settles scope, schedule and a transparent itemized estimate.

Why These Three Towns Share a Remodeling Pattern

Jericho, Underhill and Richmond sit along the Browns and Winooski river valleys, so their homes share hills, older frames and wood heat.

Hi there. I'm Tim. I have remodeled homes in Chittenden County for 50 years, and the towns east of Essex Junction are part of my regular work. Our Jericho, Underhill and Richmond pages list the services we offer in each town. This post explains what I see on the job.

Jericho: Village Centers and Hill Farms

Jericho is a spread-out town of about 5,100 people with several village centers, and its homes range from 1800s farmhouses to newer hillside builds.

Jericho had 5,104 residents in the 2020 census and covers about 35 square miles. It was granted in 1763, and its communities include Jericho Corners, Jericho Center and Riverside. The Browns River runs through town, and the Old Red Mill stands beside it.

That age and variety bring a wide range of work: kitchen and bath remodels in village houses, whole-house renovations in old farmhouses, and porches that need rebuilding after decades of weather. Our guide to kitchen remodel costs in Vermont helps you plan a budget, and our post on bathroom remodeling in Chittenden County explains the bath process.

Underhill: Homes in the Shadow of Mount Mansfield

Underhill covers about 51 square miles at the foot of Mount Mansfield, so its homes meet mountain weather and long driveways.

Underhill had 3,129 residents in 2020. Mount Mansfield, the highest summit in Vermont at 4,393 feet, rises above the town, and the Browns River begins on its slopes. The town includes Underhill Flats and Underhill Center.

Homes on the slopes see more snow and steeper approaches than homes in the valley. Roofs, porches and decks carry heavier loads, and our post on snow load on Vermont roofs, porches and decks explains what to check before winter. Delivery trucks need a plan for a steep drive, and I confirm access and a staging spot at the first visit.

Richmond: Village Homes Along the Winooski River

Richmond is a village town of about 4,200 people on the Winooski River, with older homes near the center and an easy route to Interstate 89.

Richmond had 4,167 residents in 2020 and was chartered in 1794. The Winooski River runs through town, and the Huntington River crosses its southeast corner. Interstate 89 reaches the town at Exit 11. The Round Church, a 16-sided meetinghouse built in 1812 and 1813, stands in the village.

Older village homes call for careful carpentry: matching trim, repairing original woodwork and updating kitchens that were built for a different century. Homes near the rivers can sit in a flood hazard area. If yours does, Vermont's substantial improvement procedure applies to larger projects, so ask your zoning administrator before you set the scope.

What Hillside and River-Valley Homes Need

Each setting shapes the plan, so I check the site before I price the work.

SettingWhat I check at the first visit
Hillside lotDriveway slope and truck access, snow loads on roofs and porches, drainage around the foundation
River-valley lotFlood hazard mapping through the town, basement moisture, the age of the foundation
Older farmhouseSills, framing, wiring and plumbing before design begins
Wood-heated homeClearances around stoves and chimneys before cabinets or trim go in
Private well and septicA state wastewater permit applies when you add a bedroom or change from seasonal to year-round use

Our guide to whole-house renovation in Vermont explains the order of work for a large renovation, and our post on porch repair and rebuilding covers the most common exterior project in these towns.

Projects I Take on in These Towns

Kitchens, baths, whole-house renovations, porches and custom woodwork make up most of the requests.

  • Kitchen and bath remodels. Custom cabinets and a layout that suits how your family lives.
  • Whole-house renovations. Structure and systems first, finishes last.
  • Porches and decks. Rebuilt framing, new railings and boards chosen for Vermont weather.
  • Custom woodwork. Built-ins, trim, mantels and shelving made to fit uneven walls.
